Kingdom Fungi • Mycology is the study of fungi • Fungi are classified by their rRNA • Three Important Phyla of Fungi include 1 Ascomycota (largest group contain include yeast, molds, and few mushrooms with asci) 2 Zygomycota (include bread molds) 3 Basidiomycota (include club fungi and mushrooms with basidia)Introduction The Basidiomycota contains about 30,000 described species, which is 37% of the described species of true Fungi (Kirk et al 01) The most conspicuous and familiar Basidiomycota are those that produce mushrooms, which are sexual reproductive structuresClub Fungi (basidiomycota) mushroom producing fungi with developing club shaped fruiting bodies called basidia on the gills under its cap This group of fungi, which contains tens of thousands of known species, is distinguished by the club shaped reproductive organ called the basidium Both originate as a binucleate, dikaryotic structure
